About those blurred photos – I actually do it on purpose (well, not always!). But sometimes I find it useful to slow down the shutter speed, and pan the camera to follow the action. This creates a blurred background and, if you get it just right, no blur on the player in focus, other than fun stuff like feet spinning like wheels or lacrosse sticks swinging or in mid-shot. Try it out. This photo was taken at 1/60 second, with a monopod, no VR (I never use VR for sports), at 200mm and ISO 125. More photos of the Cavalier Invitational here (Lake Tapps vs Cavaliers), here (Mercer Island JV vs Roosevelt), and here (Mt. Si vs Missoula Black).
